Dark, bold lines and muted tones define M.A. (Manny) Alonso’s artistic style and provide a glimpse into his earliest experiences. Born in Havana, Cuba in 1949, Alonso immigrated alone to the United States in 1960. He began to express his feelings of loneliness and isolation through his artwork as he prematurely metamorphosed from a naïve child to a tainted adult; Alonso's work illustrates the severity of the life he faced in America.
Alonso graduated from the University of Miami in 1971 with a B.A. in Graphic Design and Architectural Engineering. From the time he was in high school until 1984, he worked at Editorial America, S.A., where he began as an assistant art director and later became art director for the Spanish branch of Conde-Nast’s Cosmopolitan, as well as other in-house magazines, such as Vanidades, Hombre de Mundo and Geomundo. In 1985, he and his wife, Eileen, opened Anne Nouvelle Florist, one of Miami’s most reputable flower and party planning businesses. |
